DEC Alpha

DEC Alpha, also known as Alpha AXP, is a family of 64-bit microprocessors developed by Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) in the 1990s. The Alpha architecture was designed for high-performance computing and operated at clock speeds ranging from 100 MHz to 1.25 GHz. Known for its innovative design and superior performance, Alpha processors were widely used in scientific computing, server applications, and high-performance computing (HPC) environments. The Alpha architecture featured advanced features such as out-of-order execution, speculative execution, and a large on-chip cache, making it one of the most powerful processor families of its time. Despite its technological advancements and performance leadership, the Alpha architecture eventually declined in popularity due to changes in the computing landscape and DEC's acquisition by Compaq and later Hewlett-Packard. However, the Alpha architecture left a lasting legacy in the field of high-performance computing and influenced the design of future microprocessors.
