Intel 80188

Introduced by Intel in 1982, the Intel 80188 is a variant of the 16-bit microprocessor Intel 80186, operating at clock speeds up to 10 MHz. Designed for embedded systems and low-cost applications, the 80188 featured integrated peripherals such as interrupt controller, timer/counters, and DMA controller. It also included an 8-bit external data bus, reducing system cost and complexity. The 80188's affordability and versatility made it popular in a wide range of applications, including industrial control systems, point-of-sale terminals, and embedded controllers. Despite being less powerful than its counterpart, the 80186, the 80188 found success in cost-sensitive markets and contributed to Intel's dominance in the embedded systems industry.
