Return to Longitude, Latitude

Latitude is a geographic coordinate that specifies the north-south position of a point on the Earth's surface. It is measured in degrees, with values ranging from 0° at the equator to 90° northward at the North Pole and 90° southward at the South Pole. Latitude lines, also known as parallels, run parallel to the equator and are spaced at regular intervals. The equator, located at 0° latitude, divides the Earth into the Northern Hemisphere and the Southern Hemisphere. Positive latitudes are north of the equator, while negative latitudes are south of it. Latitude, along with longitude, forms the basis for the geographic coordinate system used to describe locations on the Earth's surface.
