Longitude

Return to Longitudinal, Latitude

Longitude is a geographic coordinate that specifies the east-west position of a point on the Earth's surface. It is measured in degrees, with values ranging from 0° at the Prime Meridian to 180° eastward and -180° westward. The Prime Meridian, located at 0° longitude, passes through Greenwich, England, and serves as the reference point for measuring east-west positions around the globe. Positive longitudes are east of the Prime Meridian, while negative longitudes are west of it. Longitude lines are also known as meridians and converge at the poles. Longitude, along with latitude, forms the basis for the geographic coordinate system used to describe locations on the Earth's surface.
