Truth is a concept that signifies conformity with fact or reality, often considered the ultimate standard for accuracy and honesty in discourse and actions. It entered English around the end of the 12th century, deriving from the Old English "triewþ" (faithfulness, fidelity), related to the Old Norse "tryggð," meaning "truth, trust." Synonyms for truth include verity, fact, reality, accuracy, honesty, authenticity, genuineness, certainty, correctness, and sincerity. Antonyms, representing concepts that diverge from or oppose truth, are falsehood, lie, fiction, deception, fabrication, illusion, misinformation, untruth, inaccuracy, and duplicity. Truth plays a foundational role in morality, ethics, law, and philosophy, serving as a cornerstone for building trust and understanding in human relationships and societal structures.
